As with other varieties, rye whiskey gets its name because of its mash being composed mostly of rye. The spirit is distilled and aged in new barrels to enhance its flavor. Formerly produced in regions throughout the country, most distilleries are now concentrated in Kentucky.

Rye whiskey has been in a bit of a popularity contest with bourbon. Although both are whiskey, the two styles are rather different. Rye offers spicy, fruity notes with a zesty finish and dryness that cut through cocktail mixers. It has a lighter body than bourbon but is still robust. Bartenders started to favor bourbon for its sweet and smooth characteristics that would blend better in cocktails. Lately, there has been a resurgence in the popularity of rye whiskey.
