Brandy is produced by distilling wine or other fruit mashes two or more times, and some are aged further in wooden casks. Considering brandy is made from wine, the best growing regions for wine are usually also the best regions for brandy and exhibit similar characteristics. This warming spirit is quite different from your average table wine, however. The distilled wine or fruit are processed early on for higher acidity and less sugar. Only the best parts are removed after distillation while the other parts go for another round.

Ideal as an after-dinner drink, brandy is used for cocktails such as the Sidecar, Jake Rose, brandy sour and others. It is often added to mulled wine and sangria to give it extra kick and a more complex flavor, so keep it on hand year-round. Despite its appearance in some cocktails, it is not as common of a drink base as whiskey, gin, vodka and other spirits. Brandy is most commonly served neat at room temperature to get the full flavor. Around the holidays and particularly warm nights, we recommend serving it warmed to make you and guests feel extra toasty.
