Notes on the Oban Scotch Single Malt 14 Year 750ML

Tasting Notes The nose is rich and smokey. The medicinal notes are quite evident with notes of the sea; seaweed, tarry ropes. There are notes of cut hay and wood smoke rising with a gentle estery sweetness. The palate is thick and full. Notes of citrus with smooth sweetness. The smoke wafts with notes of seaweed. The oak is quite rich with grist and cereal and malt. The finish is of good length with fruit and dry oak.

Technical Notes The Oban distillery is right in the heart of Oban overlooking the harbour. It is very unusual to find a distillery in a town centre, but it predates the town of Oban. Going back much further, Mesolithic remains were found in a cave at the back of the current site. The distillery was rebuilt between 1883 and 1887 before coming under the ownership of DCL in 1925. The still house was again rebuilt between 1969 to 1972 when the distillery maltings were closed.Built: 1794. Current Owner: Diageo. Production Capacity: 670,000 litres. House style: Medium-bodied, malty with a salty finish. Good as an aperitif with salted nuts perhaps. A Visitor Centre was opened in 1989 which attracts a steady amount of visitors. In 1990 Oban was chosen by its owners to represent the company in its Classic Malt range. Oban has the distinction of having many Manager's Drams bottlings, which were never commerically released, increasing their collectibility.
