Technical Notes John Barr is named after John Barr Cumming, the pioneering whisky trader, whose family background dates back to the 19th century Speyside whisky region. The brand first came to prominence in 1978 replacing Johnnie Walker in the UK following the European Economic Community ruling on pricing. As the EEC ruled in favour of the free movement of goods, the Distillers Company Ltd elected to push the price of Johnnie Walker up sharply, this effectively withdrew it from sale. Soon after, John Barr was introduced in the UK, packaged in the familiar Johnnie Walker square bottle. John Barr whiskies are are quality blends of Scotch, comparable in taste and craftsmanship to the leading prestige brands, but at prices well below the leading brands bottled in Scotland.
