Wine Maker Notes
A large portion of the grapes that made thiswine are grown in our cool Sonoma CoastVineyards that we call the Lazy C and the Lazy P.The combination of warm days, foggy morningsand cool evenings make the Sonoma Coastappellation some of the most highly regardedvineyardland in California. What these vineyardconditions translate into is a Syrah dark in colorwith deeply concentrated flavors of blackcherries and supple tannins. Fruit is also blendedfrom the warm growing areas of Lodi andContra Costa County. The result is a wine ofsurprising complexity.
The winemaking techniques we use on our "CalSyrah” start out by entirely destemming thehandpicked grapes and only lightly crushingthem to preserve fruit and limit harsh tannins. Then a moderate fermentation temperature ismaintained in closed stainless steel tanks withselected cultured yeast. The wine is aged in avariety of different sized oak vessels (1600 - 3000gallon oak uprights, and 60 gallon barrels) for aminimum of nine to eleven months. This allowsour California blend enough time to marry theflavors and soften the structure of Syrah. We’ve blended in small quantities of Grenacheand Mourvèdre to increase fruit expression andcreate an elegant structure.
