Balvenie Balvenie Scotch Single Malt Doublewood 17 Year
The Balvenie Madeira Cask was aged exclusively in traditional American oak whisky casks before being transferred to barrels previously used in the production of fortified Madeira wine. Rich, deep and complex. Spicy, earthy oak notes with subtle hints of vanilla and honey. Soft fruit aromas, a slow baked apple infused with cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg. The deep, luxurious aromas translate into an equally rewarding flavour. Initial sweet vanilla oak notes gradually develop into rich spices and dried fruits (apricots, figs, dates).

A limited edition bottling to commemorate the great David Stewart’s 50th year in the business and, as befits this quiet man, here’s a release that rewards just sitting and listening. This gives more of a nod to Cognac than Speyside; something to do with the dried apricot, orange blossom, and golden syrup. The palate is gentle and layered, with more dried fruits, which are balanced by an almost jammy finish where, finally, some cereal is glimpsed.(Spring 2013) Reviewed by: Dave Broom

Notes on the Balvenie Scotch Single Malt Doublewood 17 Year 750ML

Tasting Notes NOSEElegant and complex oak, vanilla, honeyed sweetness and a hint of green apple.TASTESweet with dried fruits, sherbert spice, toasted almonds and cinnamon, layered with a richness of creamy toffee notes and traces of oak and deep vanilla.FINISHVanilla oak, honey and spicy sweetness.

Wine Maker Notes The oldest Balvenie released in 2008 was The Balvenie 1964, Aged 43 Years. Cask number 10378 yielded just 151 bottles, the single malt having reduced to a cask strength of just 41.3% abv since its distillation on 18th November 1964. The Balvenie 1964 has an amazing depth of flavour, characterised by sweet infusions of dried tobacco leaf and rich fruit cake, complex layers of dried fruits, ground coffee, walnut, and elegant oakiness. The Balvenie is a unique range of single malts crafted by Malt Master David Stewart. Each is unique, but all are rich, luxuriously smooth and underpinned by a distinctive honeyed character.
