Las Rocas de San Alejandro Las Rocas Garnacha Vinas Viejas 2009
90 Point Wine Advocate: My favorite of this trio, and a big time sleeper, is the outstanding 2009 Las Rocas Garnacha Vinas Viejas, which comes from 60-100-year old vines planted at 2,500-3,500 feet elevations. Aged ten months in old French and American oak, it possesses 15.2% alcohol along with a deep ruby/purple color and copious notes of plums, raspberries, black cherries, lavender and licorice, a full-bodied texture, and impressive purity, depth and freshness. This dry red represents super value for frugal consumers. It should last for several years.

Notes on the Las Rocas Garnacha Vinas Viejas 750ML 2009

Technical Notes Our 2009 Garnacha Viñas Viejas exhibits a deep ruby color, with a spicy, rich cranberry bouquet. This well-structured wine has dark cherry flavors and elegant hints of oak, with round, supple tannins and a fruit-filled finish. Winemaking for the 2009 Garnacha Viñas Viejas followed our Las Rocas philosophy of balancing all the elements in a well-made wine with as little interference as possible with the natural processes. Cold-soaking the grapes for two weeks before fermentation helped extract the deep, intense flavors of the old-vine grapes. Fermentation of the vineyard lots lasted ten days at moderate temperatures (75°F - 80°F). We allowed all of the developing wine to complete a secondary malolactic fermentation, which softened the mouthfeel and added depth and nuance to the layered flavors in the wine. We used a balance of French and American oak barrels to condition the wine for ten months before it was bottled.
