The 10-Year Old Tawny has a mellow nose with smoked walnut, singed leather and fireside hearth ? warm and autumnal. The palate has extrovert opening with notes of cloves and Xmas cake. I find this to be a little austere for a tawny port: reserved and conservative, but with fine delineation towards the saline finish. This is a commendable Tawny, although juxtaposed against the 20-Year Old simply reveals what this is missing.
Aromas of orange zest and dried cranberries. Sweet caramel flavors on the palate. Intense and rich with warm spice character. Pair with salted nuts.
Impressions of raisins and walnuts are married to silky, dried red berry and currant flavors and aromas in this lush, finely structured wine, which shows a velvety, mellow texture supported by fresh, clean acidic notes.
During the January following each vintage, Fonseca sets aside a reserve of very concentrated, powerful vintage quality red ports, selected primarily from the firm's own quintas and judged according to their ageing potential.
As tawny ports age, they grow lighter in colour, as they throw their deposit in the cask rather than in the bottle. The process of racking contributes to the oxidation process whereby the wine's fruit qualities gradually diminish and its nutty characteristics are acquired. The wines drawn from this extensive reserve of aged ports are then carefully blended for balance and continuity of style.
Excellent with dried fruit, pecans and walnuts. Made to be enjoyed immediately.
