Vodka has somewhat of an ambiguous history with scholars in disagreement over its origins. Both Poland and Russia claim that the distilled beverage originated in their country. With little written record available, the true beginnings of vodka will probably never be known. However, there are a few sources that suggest that the earliest production of vodka took place in Russia during the 9th century. Vodka, at the time, was significantly different than what it is today with a different taste and texture and was originally intended as medicine. The alcohol content was also far lower then and only estimated at about 14 percent as that was the maximum amount that can be obtained from natural fermentation.
