The Balvenie DoubleWood is a 12 year old single malt which gains its distinctive character from being matured in two woods. Over its period of maturation it is transferred from a traditional oak whisky cask to a first fill European oak sherry cask. Each stage lends different qualities to the resulting single malt ~ the traditional casks soften and add character, whilst the sherry wood brings depth and fullness of flavour.
I'm not really a drinker, but this stuff is mellow and smooth. Unreal purity. Definitely tastes like it has someones personal touch to it.
Technical Notes The oldest Balvenie released in 2008 was The Balvenie 1964, Aged 43 Years. Cask number 10378 yielded just 151 bottles, the single malt having reduced to a cask strength of just 41.3% abv since its distillation on 18th November 1964.
The Balvenie 1964 has an amazing depth of flavour, characterised by sweet infusions of dried tobacco leaf and rich fruit cake, complex layers of dried fruits, ground coffee, walnut, and elegant oakiness.
The Balvenie is a unique range of single malts crafted by Malt Master David Stewart. Each is unique, but all are rich, luxuriously smooth and underpinned by a distinctive honeyed character.
