Travaglini Gattinara D.O.C.G. 2005 750ml

Travaglini Gattinara D.O.C.G.

90 points Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Gattinara is a pretty, mid-weight Nebbiolo. Sweet cherries, tobacco, herbs and crushed flowers are some of the notes that emerge from this classy, refined red. The Gattinara is a somewhat fleeting, ethereal wine, but it has the freshness and firmness to age well for at least another decade. This entry-level Gattinara possesses tons of varietal character in a translucent, weightless expression that is typical of the appellation. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020."

The Travaglini Gattinara offers a number of incomparable sensory characteristics which help to make this great wine unique: an intense dark red colour along with rose and violet bouquets, plus a few hints of anis, vanilla, spices and undergrowth. This is a wine to satisfy even the most sophisticated of palates, and its smoothness and roundness will endear it to those in search of elegant, intense sensations.

This is a family-run company and the experience and passion for quality has been passed on from Arturo Travaglini, who was already producing Gattinara way back in 1958, to his son Giancarlo. Nowadays the company is run by Giancarlo’s wife Liliana, his daughters Cristina and Cinzia and his son-in-law Massimo. At TRAVAGLINI, the passion for wine, the commitment to superior quality production and the desire to constantly achieve superb results have remained intact throughout the years.

The Gattinara is an austere, noble wine and combines perfectly with game and roasts. It also goes very well with strong, well-structured dishes and hard blue cheeses.

As much as I have enjoyed the wine, I am still extremely upset with Wine Chateau for sending me the 2006 when I ordered the 2005. In my mind it was a bait and switch. I prefer the flavors in the 2005 more than the 2006. If you order a specific wine, be sure to add a comment in the notes section that you will not accept replacements. They changed how they do it so it is now up to us to include no replacements instead of having a box to check (per the customer service rep I spoke with).
