In 1984, at the age of just 20, Markus Molitor assumed responsibility for the parental wine estate, then just 7 ½ acres. Despite his youth, his vision was very clearly defined and ambitious: to help restore the wines of the Moselle valley to their former glory, with unmistakeable Riesling wines true to their individual vineyard identity (terroir) and of extreme longevity. Precise quality of work both in vineyard and cellar - without any compromises - together with absolute respect for the natural products grape and wine are his guidelines. Each vineyard, each vintage should express itself in taste. He wants his wines to have structure and depth of taste as well as to inspire with the freshness and brilliance typical of the Moselle. The Molitor family have been making wine at their estate for 8 generations. The home of the winery lies situated above the Moselle in the middle of the Wehlener Klosterberg vineyard, with a view over to the vineyards of Zeltingen
Every year, a comprehensive vintage report is published in the Molitor Wine Letter. If you read this carefully, you will note that this is not simply full of praise and hype, and introduces the „new“ vintage, but that it reflects the tremendous diversity and uniqueness of each vintage. A little of the fate, but also of the fascination the winemaker experiences anew each year, that there is no sameness in the progression of weather through the seasons, and that therefore no two wine vintages can be quite the same – we would like to bring all this across to our readers, who can then at a later stage taste the development of this vintage in their glass.
Vineyard, grape variety, viticultural practises and cellar technology, when to harvest which grapes – the winemaker can direct and determine all these factors, thus reacting to both the happy and difficult aspects of a year‘s weather conditions. However, he cannot determine the conditions laid down by the vintage, and too drastic corrections would destroy the wine‘s and vintage‘s individual character, the ultimate objective of every branded product.
