Aromas of earth, tree bark and cassis dominate with hints of spice and chocolate. A rich, dense palate with a core of rustic, dusty earth, tar and black olives are framed by fine grained tannins.
Mataro from the Quarry Block parcel of the Materne Vineyard planted in 1927 was destemmed into a single cement vat, macerated for seven days and basket pressed. The wine was basket pressed into new French barriques and aged for 24 months years in oak. The best barrels were later assembled and the wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered.
