La Crema Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 2010 750ml

La Crema Chardonnay Sonoma Coast

There are just under one-half million cases of the 2010 Chardonnay Sonoma Coast, which is an excellent value, particularly when one considers it comes from the high rent district of the Sonoma Coast. Elegant white peach, apricot, and lemon blossom notes are present in this medium-bodied, crisp, well-made, barrel-fermented Chardonnay (almost three-quarters is put through malolactic fermentation). The wine possesses good freshness, purity, and depth. It should drink well for 2-3 years."

Widely considered to be one of the finest appellations anywhere in the world for the cultivation of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the Sonoma Coast appellation’s boundary begins with a narrow strip at the Mendocino County border, continuing along the western coastal edge of Sonoma County through the mouth of the Russian River Valley, and extending to the Sonoma-Los Carneros border of Napa.

This rolling expanse of land is tied together by a single unifying feature: a climate cooled by ocean wind and fog intrusion. The terrain is varied, ranging from alluvial river benches to rugged hillsides within sight of the Pacific Ocean. All, however, feel the specific effects of fog, cooling breezes and wide diurnal ranges that promote complexity, firm structural elements and reduced yields.

Our shipment of 12 bottles was poorly corked and the quality of the wine suffered as a consequence. It crossed our minds that La Crema may have unloaded a botched batch, including our order, for quick distribution. Normal quality control processes certainly would have caught the error and management must have known about it and knowingly let the batch go out in hopes that the problem might quickly disappear. At least that is what we suspect might have happened. Otherwise, La Crema is simply not the wine it once was.

One of the best California Chardonnays around. Full bodied and buttery. We haven't found anything to match this Chard for under $35.
