Colores del Sol Malbec Reserva 2011

Colores del Sol Malbec is deep ruby in color with bright purple hues. Intense aromas of ripe blackberry and hints of spice lead into a rich, fruit-driven palate, dominated by flavors of raspberry and black cherry. The wine shows excellent balance with an opulent, full-bodied mouthfeel and fine grained tannins.

Got this for $6.99 in DC and it was only worth that. You HAVE to let this breath or it is nasty right out of the bottle. Give it a day of aeration if possible.

I wasn't able to get too exited about this Malbec even at $7.97 a bottle. Certainly affordable but very unmemorable. Blueberry jam with medicine on the palate and an unpleasant finish, and not up to the quality standard of many other wines in this price point.

Notes on the Colores del Sol Malbec Reserva 750ML 2011

Wine Maker Notes The Colores del Sol Malbec is sourced exclusively from the Luján de Cuyo district within Mendoza, one of Argentina’s most prestigious wine growing regions. At elevations reaching 3,500 feet, the vineyards in Luján de Cuyo are among the highest, driest, and sunniest in the world. This elevation allows the area to remain cool while the grapes bask in bright, pure sunlight. This inspired the wine’s name: in English, ‘Colors of the Sun’ 2011 was a banner year for Argentina. After an early November frost, growers were treated to a very long, dry season. A January heat spike delayed ripening, which led to a late but exceptional harvest. The result was healthy, fully-ripened fruit, which achieved optimal flavor development.

Technical Notes Malbec originates from France, but it is Argentina where the grape truly thrives. While it is used primarily as a blending grape in Bordeaux, it has developed into a premium stand-alone varietal in Argentina. Malbec is particularly successful in Mendoza, a region of high-elevation plains at the foot of the Andes mountains. This region is full of dense, old-vine vineyards which benefit from the region’s unique climate, and which are irrigated by pure water provided by melted snow from the Andes Mountains.

The grapes enjoy consistently bright, warm days, while being chilled by the mountain air in the evenings. This diurnal variation translates into greater complexity of flavor and aroma in the finished wine.Within Mendoza, we have created Colores del Sol from the Luján de Cuyo area, which is at the northern edge of Mendoza. This area is prime real estate for Malbec, with high elevations and rugged soil producing rich, concentrated grapes. In the glass, Malbecs are known for their power and intensity. They offer rich fruit similar to Cabernet Sauvignon, along with the plush character of Merlot. The classic food pairing for Argentine Malbec is grilled meat, but Colores del Sol’s bright flavors make it a highly versatile food-pairing wine.
