Wine Maker Notes
Set high into a hilltop with panoramic views of Napa Valley, San Francisco Bay and its own estate vineyards, it's easy to see why Artesa is called the Jewel of Carneros. Perhaps no other winery captures the multi-faceted beauty of this windswept, world-famous appellation as dramatically as the Artesa estate, where the fusion of architecture, artistry and winegrowing reaches soaring heights.
The grapes were hand harvested at the peak of maturity, then hand sorted before and after a gentle
de-stemming. Picking at sunrise when the vineyards are cool and the use of a must chiller guarantees that our Pinot Noir gets a long pre-fermentation cold soak. We slowly warmed the must prior
to fermentation which allowed native yeasts to naturally inoculate half the wine. A combination of
punch-downs and gentle pump-overs was then employed to maximize color and enhance texture.
Pressed-off the skins shortly after dryness the wine was transferred to predominantly new French
oak barrels where it went through a secondary malolactic fermentation and was aged sur lie for eight
months to further develop its aroma and texture. Upon completion of barrel aging, each barrel was
individually tasted and selected by the winemaker for inclusion in the final Estate Reserve blend.
Intense, ripe black cherry and blueberry aromas fill the nose of this wine along with hints of vanilla, cherry cream and sweet smoke. Amid polished textures are abundant, rich flavors of black cherry, raspberry, sweet tea and spice.
