The 2007 ERA Proprietary Wine exhibits a deep ruby/purple color as well as cedar, roasted herb, black currant, and camphor notes, outstanding ripeness, purity, and depth, good richness, sweeter tannin than the 2006, and, like many 2007s, an underlying minerality and precision that make this vintage so special. Give it 2-3 years of bottle age, and enjoy it over the following 15 years. I had expected these offerings to be more impressive based on the seemingly unlimited investments behind the wines, the new winemaking facility, and the employment of the super-star consultant, Michel Rolland. The wines are certainly very good, in fact some are outstanding, so perhaps it is too soon to know for sure as Alpha Omega has only produced a handful of vintages. There are four separate reds produced, and while I can understand the need for a cuvee from the Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard as well as a luxury proprietary offering, the other two wines seem more similar than dissimilar.
Wine Maker Notes
The 2007 vintage had extremely small berry size so we were able to extract outstanding concentration. The 2007 vintage was also fermented at a fairly high temperature (85º F), which brings notes of darker and more profound fruit with a bigger structure to make sure that the mid palate is full, expressive and round enough to support such high concentration. A very wide range of outstanding vineyards create a diversity of profiles, that when blended bring more depth and complexity to the wine. In order to respect these identities this wine was naturally fermented unfined and unfiltered.
