This Chardonnay is in part (94%) barrel fermented in 20 percent new French oak.; with the remaining 6% tank fermented. About 70 percent of the blend undergoes malolactic fermentation The finished wine shows aromas of red apple, honeysuckle. On the palate, vanilla cream soda comes to mind while fruit flavors cantaloupe and banana are introduced. The wine finishes with bright acidity.
The Carneros appellation, which is located at the southern end of the Napa Valley, experiences foggy mornings and cooler temperatures due to the influence of the San Pablo Bay. As a result, grapes grown in Carneros have a slightly longer growing season, which allows the fruit adequate time to achieve the proper balance of ripeness, sugar and acidity. The grapes for this Chardonnay came from two of the best local vineyards; 85 percent from Stanly Ranch and 15 percent from Abbott’s Vineyard, the latter being the exceptional site for St. Clement’s designated Chardonnay. Harvest was slowed a bit because of the rain and picking began in the third week of September. The rain in September was minimal and really just gave the vines a bit of a dusting off.
