Baron Philippe de Rothschild Almaviva 2008 750ml

Baron Philippe de Rothschild Almaviva

93 Points Wine Spectator: Starting to open, with cedar, roasted vanilla and mesquite aromas giving way to a rich, loam- and black currant-filled palate. The long, fleshy finish lets the loamy edge play out nicely. Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.--Non-blind Viña Almaviva vertical (January 2011). Drink now through 2016. 12,500 cases made.

Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA has also exported its know-how beyond Bordeaux: to the Pays d'Oc, with a range of varietal wines and, more recently, Domaine de Baron'arques; to California, with Opus One; and to Chile, with Almaviva.

One of the key factors behind the company's undisputed success is the art of blending, which it practises with exceptional skill. Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, the majority shareholder of Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA, works closely with the executive directors to maintain, modernise and develop the family business.

The name Almaviva, though it has an Hispanic sonority, belongs to classical French literature: Count Almaviva is the hero of The Marriage of Figaro, the famous play by Beaumarchais (1732-1799), later turned into an opera by the genius of Mozart. The label, meanwhile, pays homage to Chile’s ancestral history, with three reproductions of a stylized design, which symbolizes the vision of the earth and the cosmos in the Mapuche civilization. The design appears on the kultrun, a ritual drum used by the Mapuche. The label bears the name Almaviva in Beaumarchais’ own handwriting. Two great traditions thus join hands to offer the whole world a promise of pleasure and excellence.
