Kalembu Mamajuana 750ml

Kalembu Mamajuana

Mamajuana is a drink exclusively from the Dominican Republic that is made by adding rum, red wine, and honey to a combination of twigs, bark, leaves and herbs. The taste is a unique combination of woody and herbal flavors, it is sweet to semi-sweet and normally the color is a deep brown/red. People normally drink it straight or on the rocks allthough recently more and more people use mamajuana in the preparation of cocktails. The alcoholic content of the original mamajuana is 30 percent (60 proof) which makes it more drinkable to people who find hard liquors like rum and whisky too strong. Also the fact that mamajuana is semi sweet makes it smoother to drink. On the other hand mamajuana still has sufficient alcohol to be considered a hard liquor. - See more at: http://www.kalembu.com/index.html#sthash.ii3ooIxm.dpuf

There are many different ingredients used in the preparation of mamajuana depending on personal preferences and the region where it is made. In the first place you need rum, the better the quality, the better the end result. If a poor quality rum is used the mamajuana can give you a hangover and the taste will not be as good. The same goes for the honey and wine used. The most important ingredients are the plants used because these determine the taste and the effects. In general mamajuana is made with a combination of a variety of plants native to the Dominican Republic. Most common are plants such as Gouania lupuloides (chewstick), Caesalpinia echinata (brazilwood), Cryptorhiza Haitiensis (canelilla leaf), Anamú (Petiveria alliacea), Anis Estrellado (Star Anise), Bohuco Pega Palo (Cissus verticillata), Bojuco Caro (Princess Vine), Marabeli, Clavo Dulce (Whole Clove), Maguey (Agave spp.) leaves, Serjania Polyphylla (basketwood) , Timacle (Chiococca alba) There is no rule including or excluding any ingredient in making mamajuana. Nevertheless there are certain plants that should be used in order to give it the authentic mamajuana taste. - See more at: http://mamajuana.info/#sthash.hdOzPPut.dpuf
