Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Artemis 2009 750ml

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Artemis

90 Points Wine Advocate: The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Artemis shows lovely depth and richness in its expressive dark fruit, flowers, tar and licorice. The influence of Antinori is already felt in this beautiful wine. A supple, generous finish rounds things out nicely. The difference between this 2009 and 2008 is night and day. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019.

2009 ARTEMIS Cabernet Sauvignon offers inviting aromas of black cherry cola, red cherry, vanilla bean and cocoa powder along with a touch of clove and sage. These notes carry over onto the palate and combine with flavors of milk chocolate, toasty oak and hint of wintergreen. The wine has a smooth texture with great depth and fine-grained tannins.

ARTEMIS, named after the Greek goddess of the hunt, is a wine that truly reflects its name. It’s the culmination of our hunt for the finest grapes from Napa Valley which, when combined with estate-grown fruit, combine to create a Cabernet Sauvignon that expresses the regional character of Napa Valley with the signature style of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars. This approach results in a wine of lush fruit flavors balanced by extraordinary structure and elegance. Whereas our Estate Cabernet Sauvignons showcase the distinctive characteristics of each vineyard, ARTEMIS demonstrates how astute grape selection and skillful blending can create a wine that represents the sum of Napa Valley’s best Cabernet Sauvignon parts.

The changes that have taken place at Stags Leap Wine Cellars over the last few years are nothing less than stunning. The Antinori family bought a 15% stake in Stags Leap Wine Cellars in 2007 and was appointed technical director as part of the deal. Long time winemaker Renzo Cotarella, who oversees all of the Antinori wines in Italy plus Antica on Atlas Peak, was brought in to consult. Sadly, the 2008 Cabernets are plagued by brett and are largely disappointing, especially considering the quality these vineyards are capable of. Some of the other recent releases I tasted were frankly undrinkable. Quality takes a meaningful step up in 2009 as the Cabernets acquire elegance and finesse. For some of the bottlings, though, the most obvious jump in quality is from 2009 and 2010. Either way, these new and upcoming releases are compelling and merit significant attention. I can’t possibly understate the huge impact Antinori, Renzo Cotarella and the team at Stags Leap Wine Cellars are having on the 2009s and 2010s. These are going to be fascinating wines to follow over the coming years and decades. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to taste the Artemis and Cask 23 2010s as the final blends had not yet been made at the time of my tastings.

The vibrant fruit, great structure and balanced acidity make this wine pair extremely well with hardy dishes such as braised short ribs or filet mignon with a Cabernet and wild mushroom demi-glace.
