Juicy dark berry notes are joined by aromas of spiced oak, vanilla and baked cherries. Undertones of earth meet mediumfirm tannins and bright acids on the persistent finish.
Wine Maker Notes
The malbec grown at our Matchbook Vineyard was harvested September 13 and October 1. 10% of the juice was bled off after crushing to concentrate flavors before fermenting with Montrachet and ES488 yeast. We pressed off the skins at dryness and barrel aged the wine for 16 months in French and American oak barrels. We added petite verdot and Dunnigan Hills syrah to increase richness and depth.
(75% Malbec/14% Syrah/11% Petit Verdot). Estate-grown Malbec grapes were harvested in two different passes. 10% of the free run juice was bled off and fermented with Montrachet and ES488 yeast. The remainder was fermented using indigenous yeast. Pressed off the skins at dryness, the wine aged for 16 months in French and American oak.
CLASSIC SAWBUCKWhen owners John and Lane Giguiere started their first winery in 1983 they were young and enthusiastic with dreams much bigger than their bank account. The first years were financed by credit cards and hope until they felt like they were down to their last sawbuck before R.H. Phillips and Toasted Head became wine brands.About the AppellationSawbuck wines are made from grapes grown in the northern edge of the California wine country; Mendocino and Yolo Counties. Both are unique growing regions that are left of center of the mainstream. Often overlooked, they offer wines of incredible quality at a value price.
