Dark, dense and brooding, offering a bright light of spicy berry flavors pushing through the layers of dark plum, black olive, dried peach and licorice. Finishes with precision and intensity. Needs time to come together with cellaring. Shiraz and Viognier. Best from 2015 through 2020.—H.S.
Tasting Notes Profound aromatics of raspberries, apricots and creme de cassis, cloaking subtle hints of black olive andcherry. A dark, rich and concentrated palate flows from black fruits into brooding anise and dark chocolate and is bound bytight, grainy tannins. The wine possesses a multitude of different facets and nuances that will constantly change and evolve.
Technical Notes One of Australia’s leading wineries, Torbreck Vintners was founded by David Powell in 1994. He affectionately named hiswinery “Torbreck” after a forest in Scotland where he worked as a lumberjack. Torbreck produces wines exclusively from themost revered vineyards in the Barossa Valley, home to some of the oldest vines and clonal material in the world, thanks to itsfreedom from Phylloxera. Red wines are produced from the classic Barossa varieties: Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro, usingmanual, traditional methods and are complemented by white wines produced from Semillon, Viognier, Marsanne andRoussanne. The wines have been praised effusively since the beginning by the world’s leading wine critics, journalists and opinion leadersand are represented on the wine lists of the world’s best restaurants. In 2008 the completion of a state of the art, eco-friendlywinery, packaging and administration building has meant the realization of David’s goal to have all Torbreck wines producedand bottled on the estate.
