The 2010 Guidalberto comes across as cool and inward in this vintage. Most recent Guidalbertos have been delicious upon release, but this is a wine that will need another year or two before it starts opening up. There is plenty of energy and vitality in the glass, but readers will need to be patient. Dark red cherries, flowers, licorice and a hint of tobacco are layered into the firm, structured finish. In 2010 the blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020. ”
A full-bodied wine of intense red fruit flavor and and elegantly supple texture supported by ripe, silky tannins. The Merlot in the blend is expressed in sweet black fruit with overall aromas of ripe, concentrated berries offset by restrained spicy oak notes.
Wine Maker Notes
The wine is currently produced from fifteen acres of four year old vines at the estate of Tenuta La Commenda, adjacent to San Guido and under long-term contract to Nicoló Incisa. Acreage is planned to expand to forty acres over the near term, only part of which will be used in the Guidalberto blend. Plantings are at present 40 percent Merlot, 40 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 20 percent Sangiovese.
The vinification facility for Guidalberto is a converted olive-oil mill at Tenuta San Guido which has been equipped with stainless steel tanks and independent cooperage. Fermentation takes place separately for each variety at a maximum temperature of 30º C (86º F), with a maceration period of fifteen days for the Cabernet and Merlot grapes and twelve for the Sangiovese. Malolactic fermentation is completed by the end of November. Oak aging takes place over twelve months in 225 liter French and American oak barrels, 30 percent of which are new and 70 percent of which are from prior vintages' use for Sassicaia. The 2000 vintage, the product of a superb, healthy harvest, yielded 5,000 cases; production is expected to rise to a maximum of 17,000 cases by 2010.
