Glass-staining purple. Powerfully scented nose displays sexy red and dark berries along with smoky bacon, pungent herbs and incense. The smokiness carries onto the palate, which offers sweet black raspberry, cassis and candied violet flavors. Suave cola and vanilla notes arrive on the long, strikingly fresh finish. Very elegant wine, and delicious right now.

This sandy, west-facing vineyard is named after Roman’s private residence, which celebrated its 100th birthday in 1997. The Syrah and Mourvedre patches consistently offer plush flavour intensity, ripe tannins and good acidity.
