Bright, medium ruby-red. Musky aromas of red cherry, raspberry, tobacco and smoked meat. Round, broad and lush, this forward, easygoing wine conveys a low-acid impression and considerable sweetness to its red fruit, licorice and candied fruit flavors. Finishes with soft tannins and a hint of minerality. A very fruity, almost syrupy style of wine that offers uncomplicated but highly satisfying drinking for the near term.
Aia Vecchia’s 2007 Lagone is a wonderful entry-level red from Tuscany’s Maremma. A blend of 60% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, the Aia Vecchia emerges with dark red berries, grilled herbs and spices, showing lovely vibrancy and freshness all the way through to the finish. This is a great value and a fabulous introduction to the wines of Bolgheri. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2014.
Aromas of plum and dark fruits lead to a full body, with velvety tannins and a soft, caressing finish. Minerally and floral. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best after 2011. 10,800 cases made. –JS
