Wine Maker Notes
We sourced our grapes from vineyards throughout Napa Valley, collecting fruit from several locations to show the diversity and depth of this world-renowned wine region. A portion of the wine comes from Rutherford, where the famous Rutherford Dust gives distinctive notes of cocoa powder, juicy fruit and complex tannins. The mountain vineyards provide rich aromatics, briary intensity and a bright pop of boysenberry. The northern Napa Valley floor vineyards complement the profile, providing rich texture and luscious tannins.
Sterling Vineyards sources wines of exceptional quality from the staggering slopes of Diamond Mountain Ranch, the flat valley floor of Three Palms Vineyard, and many other diverse terroirs throughout Napa Valley and other select California regions. Our single vineyard estates include Diamond Mountain Ranch and Three Palms Vineyard. These sites feature vastly different terroirs—Diamond Mountain Ranch has staggeringly steep slopes, while Three Palms, with its famous silhouette, stretches over the valley floor at the mouth of Dutch Henry Canyon. Both produce single-vineyard wines of great distinction.
Our Diamond Mountain Ranch lies west of the town of Calistoga, near the top of the Diamond Mountain American Viticultural Area (AVA). The ranch’s 120 acres range in elevation from 1,700 to 2,000 feet, climbing the steep northern face of the Mayacamas Mountains. Nearly vertical slopes, austere soils, and dry farming stress the vines planted here, and low-vigor volcanic soils provide minimal nutrition. The result? Small, intensely concentrated fruit clusters that make deeply pigmented, assertive wines with full body and rich tannins.
Located at the mouth of Dutch Henry Canyon, our Three Palms Vineyard was named for the three palm trees whose silhouettes stand out above the flat valley floor. Vines here take deep root in thin, well-draining soils that lie under a layer of volcanic stones washed down the canyon walls over centuries. The vineyard covers 74.5 acres of valley floor and is planted primarily to Merlot with small amounts of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec.
This wine makes a fine accompaniment to braised short ribs or pasta carbonara.
