The Suscol Merlot is a captivating wine with flavors of dark plum, herb and cedar. Earthy notes blend harmoniously with the spicy French oak, while the texture of the wine resembles a combination of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is complete from front to finish and its unique character offers a suppleness on the palate that few Merlots achieve. From year to year, this wine’s distinctiveness lies in the lush, velvety tannins that expand upon the initial sip and develop with richness through the finish.
Cooler, windy weather during bloom is typical for this area and the 2001 vintage wasno exception. Fruit set was average for the vineyard, which results in very looseclusters at harvest. Moderate conditions prevailed throughout the summer months, which ripened the fruit. Very warm temperatures at the end of August and earlySeptember pushed maturities ahead of normal, and we harvested the fruit in the firstpart of October.
The region is very cool with dense fog early in the season and windy conditions allyear long. The vines are planted on a gentle, rolling knoll of deep, loamy soils andare cordon trained to give maximum light exposure to the fruit while the berries arevery small, yielding low tonnage. Due to the cooler conditions, the vines matureslowly which allows time for great tannin maturity. This Merlot is often harvestedwith or after Napa Valley Cabernets and this extra Òhang timeÓ offers a velvety textureto the wine beyond compare.
