Port Charlotte Heavily Peated Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky is an experiment by Bruichladdich Distillery that was masterminded by Master Distiller Jim McEwan. McEwan, who began working at Bowmore Distillery on August 1, 1963, has over five decades of experience in the Scotch whisky industry. “I started work for Bowmore Distillery on 1st August 1963 as an apprentice cooper,” he says. “During that period I gained experience in virtually every aspect of distillation from warehousing, mashing and malting.”
Following distillation, Port Charlotte 10 Year Old is matured in traditional oak casks, which are laid to rest in the nearby village of Port Charlotte for a minimum of a decade. As a result, the whisky has an oily aroma, with hints of smoky barley, sherry and citrus zest. The aroma gives way to notes of dried fruits, milk chocolate, roasted walnuts and rich coffee that are balanced by a smoky undertone. The finish is focused and dark, with touches of dried fruits and smoky chocolate.
