Wine Maker Notes
A renowned Zinfandel growing region, Sonoma County boasts ideal climatic conditions for this thin-skinned and fairly finicky varietal. Due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, reliable fog frames the warm days, tempering the heat. Our wine is sourced from three vineyards in northern Sonoma County. The Raggio Vineyard, at the top of Alexander Valley, sits on a steep hill sloping toward the Russian River. The vines, which are over 80 years old, have a stellar pedigree, producing intense, concentrated flavors. Also boasting a mountain-like climate, House Vineyard has old, head-trained vines and Sink Vineyard has newer, vertical shoot positioning-trained vines. At harvest, we hand picked the grapes in small lots. At the winery, the fruit was allowed to sit for three days at cold temperatures, a process which captures the bright fruit aromas and intense color in the Zinfandel. After the cold soak, we allowed the temperatures to increase for a nice, warm fermentation, which was combined with regular punch-downs to achieve maximum extraction of flavors. The wine was aged in a combination of oak barrels for 14 months.
The bold, complex flavors and ready-to-drink approachability of this wine pair well with dishes such as herb-roasted chicken, pork tenderloin or pasta in a tomato-cream sauce.
