Campo Viejo is one of the most famous of all Rioja wines. Ever since two local winemakers – Beristain and Ortigüela – created the first vintage in 1959, we have been synonymous with innovation and a symbol of the expressiveness, colour and vibrancy that Rioja is renowned for. We have a deep love and respect for our land. We are passionate about preserving its richness and beauty for generations to come. Our state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly winery and sustainable winemaking practices attest to that.
Our Winemaker, Elena Adell, travelled the world researching the industry’s best wineries. Her input into the design facilitated the creation of a modern winery that somehow manages to retain the feeling of working on a small Chateau, as wine artisans.
Burying the winery is as visually spectacular as it is practical. Concealing the bulk of the construction underground has naturally created dark, serene areas with small amounts of natural light, which evoke the feeling of traditional Rioja wineries and allow our winemakers to work as artisans.
The underground construction has not only preserved the natural beauty of the landscape and created a traditional feel, it has also facilitated conditions that are perfect for winemaking: the ability to move the grapes and wine by gravity, a consistent temperature and stable humidity levels.
