Notes on the Neyers Pinot Noir Placida Vineyard 750ML 2012

Wine Maker Notes Chuy Ordaz is a legendary ’man of the soil’. He has been farming vineyards in California’s north coast for most of the past 50 years. And the stories he can tell! When he joins us for lunch, we set aside the rest of the day to listen to his tales. Last year, having heard of our success with the Roberts Road Pinot Noir, Chuy carved out some of his Placida Vineyard Pinot Noir for us. The budwood is also from ’Selection Massale’ sources, but it’s propagated on rocky soil to the northwest of Roberts Road, in the chilly Russian River Valley area. A quick look at the vines confirms what you suspect: the Pinot Noir berries are tiny and dark colored, and the crop level is small. I get a hint of the aroma by just picking a single grape on a warm day. The wine is full of the jammy, exotic flavors of Pinot Noir. Try drinking it slightly chilled as they do in Burgundy. It allows the subtle flavors to emerge slowly so you can experience all of them. I think of this as a Volnay to the Morey-St. Denis of the Roberts Road bottling.
