93 Points Wine Advocate: The 2002 Llicorella Seleccio raises the bar significantly. It is a blend of Garnacha Negra, Carinena, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah aged for 12-14 months in French and American oak. Dark ruby in color, it has a fragrant bouquet of pain grille, leather, mineral, meat, blue and black fruits which jumps from the glass. The wine has terrific grip, a racy style, and intense, sweet fruit. The finish is long and pure. Drink this beauty over the next 10 years.
Highly variable from bottle to bottle. The first bottle: Popped & poured, inky purple-black. The bouquet literally jumps from the glass, dark fruit, leather, coffee and a touch of spice. The initial mouth flavors are tar dark fruit and a touch of menthol and leather. Long, satisfying, dry finish. Next two bottles were corked
Tasting Notes Dark maroon cherry red wine with violet highlights. Aroma of ripened black fruit and mineral notes. In the mouth it is flavorful, meaty and potent, with ripe and oily tannins. Persistent aftertaste, elegant and well balanced with lovely nuances from the ageing process.
Food Pairing Due to its characteristics this wine has not been filtered and we recommend that it is decanted and served between 16 and 18ºC. To be served with red meat, wild game, roast lamb, pork or beef, blue and cured cheeses.
Additional Notes These Qualified Designation of Origin wines are produced in the interior of Catalonia, in the region that gives its name to the designation of origin: PRIORAT. The Priorat is an area enclosed by a rugged ring of mountains which form a fascinating landscape where the grapevines grow on terraces and steep slopes. The slate soil in this area, also known as "llicorella", gives the wines a great mineral character.
