Rocca Di Castagnoli Stielle Toscana I.G.T 2005 750ml

Rocca Di Castagnoli Stielle Toscana I.G.T

94 Points Wine Advocate: The estatea s 2005 Stielle is seriously beautiful in this vintage. Sweet dark cherries, flowers, licorice and herbs come together seamlessly in this rich, textured red. This level of depth and concentration was not at all easy to achieve in 2005. I am quite taken with the winea s soft, utterly engaging personality. The round, generous finish leaves a lasting impression for its polish, detail and purity. This is a fabulous effort. Stielle is a blend of 70% Sangiovese and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in French oak. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025.

Top Tuscan reds can easily age for decades, and most need a minimum of a few years in bottle to begin integrating their powerful flavors. For the Connoisseur Collection, we searched for an older vintage of a stellar bottle and discovered the Stielle cuvée from Rocca di Castagnoli, which fits the bill perfectly. Grapes for this Sangiovese/ Cabernet blend came from a parcel of land in the Tuscan town of Castagnoli, where local records document the sale of a holding called Stielle in the year 940 AD. Today Stielle is still the name and location of the best vineyard within the Rocca di Castagnoli estate. Owned by Calogero Calì, a successful lawyer from Milan, Rocca di Castagnoli is a vast property in the high hills of the Gaiole region that is managed with great integrity and meticulous attention to viticulture. In fact, the winery has led important research on Sangiovese clones and their interaction with Chianti's mosaic of soil types. Rather than blending lots from its different vineyards, historically a common practice in Chianti, winemaker Beppe Caviola concentrates on terroir-focused wines such as the Stielle, the winery's top cuvée.

This wine has what I call a sexy delivery! It's smooth as silk, a nice nose of red fruit and a pleasant finish. I believe it deserves it's high rating and is worth the price. The only reason I give it 4 instead of 5 stars is that it lacks a bit in complexity that really great wines have. I really think it deserves four-and-a-half stars though. JRH
Excellent. Just ordered 6 more bottles.
