Notes on the Camparron Crianza Tinta De Toro 750ML 2008

Wine Maker Notes Toro is a DO (Denominación de Origen) within the larger Castilla y Leon autonomous of Spain. It is located close to the Portuguese border, in the south-east of the province of Zamora. Winemaking here dates back to Roman times. Toro was awarded DO status in 1987. Like neighboring regions, Toro experiences an extreme continental climate, with hot, dry and often long summers followed by cold winters. The Atlantic Ocean provides some cooling influences and the Duero river is a much-needed source of water, but overall the climate is harsh. Average sunshine hours can reach 3000 per year, making Toro primarily a red wine producer. In Spanish, of course, 'toro' means 'bull', which aptly describes the strong and robust character of the region's wines. According to local wine laws they are permitted to have an alcoholic strength of up to 15%, although the top producers often restrict this level to 13.5%.

Technical Notes A first selection in the field is followed by another more careful one at the sorting table. Only the best chosen grapes are then completely destemmed. The must ferments in stainless steel tanks and temperature controlled cement vats, watched over with care, and pumped over three times a day. Depending on the tasting session, there are 1 to 3 racking, to help with clarification and final aroma profile of the wine. This combination of a unique diverse terroir and careful attention during winemaking and aging reveals itself in the final wine.
