Prime Cellars Prime Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville Napa Valley 2009
95 Points Wine Enthusiast: A wonderful 100% Cabernet, and a fine followup to their 2008 Midoriya Hills Vineyard Cab, which comprises some of the blend. Prime’s first wine to bear the new Coombsville appellation is smooth, elegant and complex, with layers of blackberries, black currants and crême de cassis. Beautiful now and over the next 8 years.

Notes on the Prime Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville Napa Valley 750ML 2009

Wine Maker Notes This is our fourth vintage of “District 4” Cabernet Sauvignon. It was aged for 18 months in 75% new oak leaving it with an aroma of vanilla, gingerbread, spice and cream. I added a substantial amount of Cabernet Franc to this year’s blend because I liked the spice it added to the nose. The Cabernet Franc also added a hint of earthiness to the palate while still allowing the fruit of the Cabernet Sauvignon to shine through. Fine tannins and flavors of blackberry and cedar round out the finish of this food friendly wine.

Wine Review This hillside vineyard is located between Caldwell and Porter Family in Eastern Napa. It is at about 600’ elevation with volcanic rocky soil. This vineyard produces unusually high acid grapes each year. Aging in 100% new oak barrels (a mix of Hungarian and French) gives this wine a distinctive maple, clove and vanilla characteristic. The wine has blackberry on the palette with fine tannin and a long finish.
