Wine Advocate 92 points - The fresh, floral and expressive 2016 Catena Malbec blends grapes from different parts of Mendoza: Lunlunta, Agrelo, Altamira El Cepillo and Gualtallary. It fermented in stainless steel and matured in French and American oak barrels for an average of 12 months. It’s straight and a little austere but has deep flavors. Superb quality for the price and volume. 984,000 bottles produced..June/2018
Vinous 89 points - Bright ruby-red. Musky scents of black raspberry, blueberry, dark chocolate and spices. Denser, sweeter and riper than the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon, showing a more chocolatey character on the palate, but also nicely delineated owing to subtle herb and pepper nuances and mineral accents. The wine’s Uco Valley component is obvious in its inner-mouth perfume. Not the ripest or fullest recent vintage for this bottling but this intense midweight finishes with repeating pepper and herb notes and very good length..July/2018
I devoted nearly a full day to tasting at the Catena Zapata winery in Agrelo as Argentina’s #1 producer offers excellent to otherworldly wines at a range of price points-and that’s not even including the superb wines made by Nicolas Catena’s daughter Laura and son Ernesto, and the Bodega Aleanna label of his own multi-talented winemaker Alejandro Vigil. - From Argentina’s Wines Enter the World Stage (Jul 2018) by Stephen Tanzer
The Catena family has conducted extensive research into the soils and microclimates of Mendoza's high altitude wine country in the foothills of the Andes mountains. At different altitudes, the family’s Malbec vineyards express a unique profile of aromas and flavors: the ripe plum fruit flavors and silky texture of the Angelica vineyard (2,850’ elevation); the dark fruit character and pepper notes of the La Pirámide vineyard (3,100’ elevation); the black cherry aromas and excellent structure of the Altamira vineyard (3,870’ elevation); the explosive floral aromatics full, concentrated mouthfeel of the Adrianna vineyard (5,000’). The blend of these components creates a wine of unique character that has balance, concentration and a strong varietal identity.
