Real Companhia Velha is the maker of this Delaforce Alvarinho , a white wine from Douro. The combination of fruity aromas and a palate highlighted by crisp acidity and flavourful minerality make this wine a classic example of variety. It makes the perfect compliment to fish and many types of grilled shellfish.
The 2014 Alvarinho is dry, unoaked and comes in at 13.5% alcohol. Douro and Alvarinho isn't anyone's first thought. This, however, is made by winemaker Jorge Moreira (Poeira, La Rosa, etc.) and he has certainly shown an affinity for the grape in the past. In this vintage--a trend I'm noticing in a lot of places--there are green nuances with that herbaceous overtone. It has the feel of an early-picked wine. That's not necessarily a bad thing, especially for whites. I rather enjoyed it a lot, but it clearly won't be everyone's vision of Alvarinho. Grassy and fresh, it has reasonable concentration for the grape and supporting acidity.
