It is on the steep slopes of the Mâconnais, from terraced vineyards, where one of the grandest white wines of Burgundy is harvested; Pouilly-Fuissé. Emblematic of this great region in southern Burgundy, the great stone monoliths of Solutré and Vergisson shelter the famous vineyards of Pouilly-fuissé. The appellation is based on a single variety, chardonnay, and extends across four communes: Solutré- Pouilly, Fuissé, Chaintré and Vergisson. It is the clay and limestone terroir of Vergisson that allows the Pouilly-Fuissé of Alix de Montille to flourish.
A ripe and mildly exotic nose offers up notes of pear, white peach, acacia blossom and a hint of Viognier. The textured and delicious flavors lack the same energy as the best wines in the range though I suspect that the sense of vibrancy will recover once this is bottled as there seems to be solid acidity.
