The nose starts with enchanting fruit and floral aromas, but quickly gives room to a more typical Cabernet Franc: autumn leaves, green peppers, and earthiness. The seductive and stern details on the palate complement each other, making this a very versatile wine.
Bourgueil, along with its neighbor Chinon, are the planet’s benchmarks for the noble Cabernet Franc grape. Chanteleuserie’s Cuvee Alouettes, fashioned from 100% Cabernet Franc planted on sandy clay soils, is the domaine’s most approachable and immediately delicious wine. Opaque purple-ruby in the glass, the 2015 Cuvee Alouettes casts aromas of freshly crushed black raspberries and black currants, tobacco, violets, and damp earth. Fresh, lively, and immediately delicious, the wine stains the palate with chewy blackberry and cassis fruit, hints of tobacco, white pepper, and appetizing herbal notes. Soft, framing tannins and lovely hints of violets, pepper, and licorice sneak in on the mid-palate and segue the wine to its long, fresh, soil-driven finish. As always, the Cuvee Alouettes is a stunning wine and a terrific value. We suggest buying a case to enjoy now and over the next five years with pork rillettes, rabbit in a mustard sauce, steak frites, grilled eggplant, fresh chevres, burgers, and roast poultry.
