The vineyards were originally planted in the second century by the Romans and produce some of the most expressive wines here. Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre form the basis of our Crus - Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Beaumes de Venise - while Muscat a grains fins gives us our vin doux naturel - Muscat de Beaumes de Venise. The vinification cellar is gravity-fed and the cellars are temperature-controlled, located in the heart of the domaine.
The Domaine du Grand Montmirail is owned by the Cheron family. Originally from Burgundy, Denis Cheron bought the Cave du Grand Comtadiné in Vacqueyas in the 1960s. Domaine du Grand Montmirail also owns vineyards in Vacqueyras, just as one leaves the town heading southwest. The wine is vinified in much the same way as the Gigondas, using about 65% Grenache, 25% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre. Replete with fruit and absent of the rusticity often associated with Vacqueyras, the offers a delicious mouthful of wine, with notes of berries, spice and a finishing note of licorice.
