André Ostertag’s classic Riesling bottling from his hometown of Epfig has to be one of the purest, most typical bottlings of the variety in the world. The Ostertag domaine, founded in 1966, celebrated fifty years of history this year. André’s father handed him the keys to the family cellars when André was in his early twenties, and he taught himself how to make wine the old-fashioned way: over time, by doing. We are the beneficiaries of his patiently honed expertise.
The ‘d’E’ stands for ‘Epfig’, the village that this wine is sourced from. Some fifteen-or-so plots are used to make this wine. It’s naturally fermented and sent to stainless steel tank to mature. It’s all farmed biodynamically (certified) too. Ostertag make some pretty serious wines (and seriously delicious).
Intense kind of riesling. Quince, honey, pot pourri, tropical fruit scents. Potent fragrance. In the palate it’s also pretty full-on. Big flavour of sour-sweet tang of fruit with tinny acidity and a clatter of steel-like minerality to close. Punchy, fuller flavoured riesling with big, freshening feel.
