Dark brown with an orange cast; fresh peppermint aromas are very distinctive; a huge blast of menthol assaults the palate with a drying bitter herb finish. Fratelli Branca Distillerie, does say that it contains 27 different herbs and spices taken from four continents. Among the known ingredients are aloe, gentian root, rhubarb, gum myrrh, red cinchona bark, and zedoary. The rumored ingredients include saffron.Fernet Branca is a bitter, aromatic spirit made from of over 40 herbs and spices, including myrrh, rhubarb, chamomile, cardamom and saffron, with a base of grape alcohol. The recipe is a secret, and was created by the young Maria Scala in 1845 in Milan. Scala's name became Maria Branca through marriage, and the product's name was born. The Fernet Branca is still produced in Milan by the company Fratelli Branca, overseen by the Branca family. Fernet Branca is usually served as a digestif after a meal, but may also be enjoyed with coffee and espresso, or mixed into coffee and espresso drinks. It may be enjoyed neat at room temperature or with ice.
Fernet-Branca is not called "Il Re Degli Amari"- (King of Bitters)for nothing. Every-time I drink some, I fall in love with it all over again! I prefer it served neat before a meal and always after a large meal. A dram in your espresso is not bad either!! Not a fan of Fernet and Coke; however, I have had some interesting drinks incorporating Fernet concocted by local bartender. This Fernet really shines on it's own and is a must, for me at least, in a well stocked home bar!
