GROWING REGION e 2016 vintage in Eden Valley, a sub-region of Barossa Valley, was very warm with several heat spikes that hastened development in the grapes. Good rainfall over the winter and early spring was followed by a very dry summer with warmer-than-normal temperatures. Because of the warm weather, harvest was early in Eden Valley and throughout South Australia. The Greg Norman Estates Chardonnay fruit ripened quickly and was harvested before it became overripe. Winemaker Andrew Hales wanted to retain the fresh stone fruit peach and nectarine favors that are a hallmark of this wine. The Rogers and Haselmere vineyards in Eden Valley were the primary sources for the 2016 Greg Norman Estates Chardonnay. Additionally, a small amount of Adelaide Hills Chardonnay from the Angas Vineyard was blended into this wine to add complexity and a certain delicacy to the nal blend.
WINEMAKING The fruit was machine harvested at night or in the early morning, transported to the winery and gently pressed to refrigerated tanks. After settling, the clear juice was racked o and transferred to barrel. The wine was fermented in separate vineyard-block batches to optimize quality and capture individual vineyard favors dfferences. Controlled cool fermentation in French oak barriques allowed for the highest concentration of fruit favors to marry elegantly with the subtle but supportive vanilla oak spice. Maturation on lees, in barrel for 10 months, with regular stirring, helped to keep the wines fresh and buildfinesse, balance and texture.
WINEMAKER’S NOTES The 2016 Greg Norman Estates Eden Valley Chardonnay is a luminous yellow gold color in the glass.
