Kick Ranch, owned by Dick Keenan, is a hillside vineyard located in northeast Santa Rosa’s Rincon Valley. Itssoil is Pleasanton-Haire complex that has been deposited in an alluvial fan surrounding natural runoff from the Mayacama mountains. Fantastic drainage has forced the plants to dig deep roots, naturally balancing the vines with low yields and concentrated fruit. With a straight shot through the Petaluma wind gap, the cool maritimebreezes balance the intense afternoon exposure. This results in dark, ripe fruit with good acidity.
Beautifully balanced yet highly expressive aromas of rosemary, lavender and violet lead to a core of blueberry compote, Madagascar vanilla, and boysenberry. The palate has soft texture, and silky cacao tannins. Well-integrated acid makes this wine a perfect match for grilled meats and roasted lamb.
A mere youth, this blend of 68% Syrah, 30% Grenache and 2% Viognier needs time, suggesting a decant before enjoying. High-toned and juicy blueberry and blackberry remain shy on the palate, while the wine's more exotic handfuls of black licorice and tea are more pronounced, alongside a dark chocolate vibe and pinches of white pepper.
