Our 2015 Leese-Fitch Zinfandel swirls with dark purple color emitting aromas of blackberry jam, cinnamon toast, sandalwood, and grilled plum with hints of black pepper and dried g. On the palate, you taste dried cherry, black raspberry, toasted coconut, roasted almonds, and deep vanilla custard. The flavor continues to develop on the finish showing the brambly side of Zinfandel and some earthy characteristics; roasted Portobello mushroom, Mexican hot chocolate, and soy with hints of espresso and sweet leather.
In 2015, we secured some great Zinfandel from Lodi and the Northern Interior Valley just outside of Livermore. The Lodi is a bit fruitier and warm in character whereas the Northern Interior adds depth and some of the earthier characters of mushroom and espresso. Then we added Lodi Alicante Bouchet for color, Lodi Barbera for softness and bright berry fruit, and just a dab of Paso Robles Petite Sirah for added blue fruit and structure. 50% new American oak aging adds depth and some of the toffee like notes of deep vanilla, coconut, dill, and even a bit of the sweet leather nuance. Rich and layered Zinfandel that brings the fruit to any party or gathering.
This blend makes me think of traditional Chicken Mole tacos with grilled spring onions and shredded jicama. A BBQ shredded pork pizza would also be a fun pairing.
