Behind the wine brand Lindeman's is a beautiful story. The founder was a doctor, Dr. Henry J. Lindeman. Just after graduating, he left London's St. Bartholomew's Hospital to travel through Europe. He liked the Mediterranean life with olive oil and tasty wines, and he felt that residents around the Mediterranean looked much healthier than his pale compatriots in London. In 1840, the adventurous doctor and his wife Eliza moved to Australia.
In his rural practice he was shocked by the poor health of the settlers. Wine, he thought, could work healing. That is why in 1843 he planted his first grapes in Cawarra in Hunter Valley, made wine from it and wrote it to his patients. What was once meant as a medicine is now a 'means' to enjoy.
