Deep scarlet color. Lovely plum nose, rich fruit, violets, and dark chocolate. Hints of licorice, vanilla, blackberry, and tobacco envelop the fruit. On the palate a great entry, smooth and full bodied with a core of dark cherry fruit and layers of anise, spice, and coca. Well-knit with a vibrant yet plush midpalate, and a textural plummy finish with sweet notes of white pepper, cassis, and chocolate. The 2013 vintage gave us near perfect growing conditions, which led to an early harvest with the first Merlot arriving from Carneros on September 12. Oak Knoll Merlot was right on its heels in mid-September with Estate Merlot in Oakville arriving at the winery in early October, ten days ahead of 2011 and 2012. Spring conditions were warm and dry which led to an early bud break and very even set. Aside from one hot spell at the end of June, temperatures remained moderate throughout spring and summer. With only 8 inches of rain from January through June, the vines had less green growth and an earlier turn to fruit development. As harvest progressed, we became more and more aware that the color and intensity of Bordeaux reds in the 2013 vintage would lead to a truly phenomenal vintage. Our goal with Merlot is to showcase the best of this noble and important Bordeaux variety. We start by sourcing fruit from our Oakville Estate, which provides big body and structure; this gives our Merlot "big shoulders." We then blend in fruit from vineyards in the cooler southern half of the Napa Valley–stretching from the Oakville District south to Carneros–in particular, the renowned subdistrict of Oak Knoll. From these vineyards, the Merlot shows vibrant flavors, dense color, and supple texture. Each vineyard block is made separately, giving it the care and attention needed to reach its full expression. Together, the lots combine beautifully. Our Merlot is often called a "Cab-lovers" Merlot for its body and richness, a designation we are proud of.
